... "merging high-performance computing and high-end visualization with genomics, proteomics and bioimaging, the Buffalo Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences has created a unique and powerful combination of technologies and research expertise that is fostering advances in science and health care. " ...
Bioinformatics is an emerging discipline, which combines efforts and advances in computer science, computational science, and various aspects of life science. While there is currently no generally agreed upon definition of 'bioinformatics,' one view is that bioinformatics is concerned with the creation and development of advanced information and computational technologies to solve problems in biology.
The areas emphasized include computational genomics, proteomics, pharmacogenomics, metabolomics, epigenetics and very large-scale biological simulations, with the ultimate aim of being able to simulate at the molecular level entire cells. While the research at the COE is very fundamental, since the practical implications are often immediate, emphasis will be placed on the rapid commercialization of the ideas and technology that is developed. By combining uniquely talented individuals with superb resources, the goal is to create one of the worlds best Bioinformatics Centers.
