Become a Six Sigma Black Belt

Six Sigma Black Belts, SSBB, execute projects under the guidance of Master Black Belts that ensure the proper application of the Six Sigma methodology to the specific project phase and situation. The black belt works full-time on their Six Sigma assignment. Their role is to focus on the execution of Six Sigma projects, as compared to Champions and Master Black Belts whose focus is on identifying and chartering projects that would benefit from Six Sigma methods.

The Black Belt typically becomes certified in Six Sigma.  Certification (CSSBB) can be achieved through the Institute of Industrial Engineers and the American Society for Quality, ASQ (Link).  The number of institutions offering training and certification has proliferated.  The candidate for certification as a Black Belt in Six Sigma must become proficient in the SSBB Body of Knowledge (PDF).  Motorola, the company that pioneered the application of Six Sigma, offers certification training in Six Sigma integrated with Lean Manufacturing techniques (Link).  Achievement of the Black Belt certificate requires successful completion of Six Sigma training, passing the certification test, and demonstration of two completed Six Sigma projects.

The Six Sigma Black Belt credential is well respected in the marketplace with a history of exciting career paths and leadership progression.  GE SixSigma Black Belts move into the field to improve customer processes: ...   "The experts help clients cut costs, fix processes, manage change and develop executives. After a year or two working on client engagements, these consultants rejoin their business units. The program relies on the Six Sigma method that GE made famous. Six Sigma uses a statistical approach to analyze business processes and improve quality controls. "  ...  GE Black Belts to the Rescue (PDF).  General Electric Black Belts deploy an arsenal of Six Sigma and lean techniques to solve their customers' problems:  ...   "Applying a Kaizen to initially measure, then improve, a process offers a method to quickly focus on eliminating waste and accelerating cycle times. And, in this case, the Black Belt was able to deliver the needed improvements on time to the emergency department. "  ...  GE Kaizen Case Study (PDF).
