DataMining SixSigma DMAIC Methodology

Data mining vendor KXEN adopts Six Sigma DMAIC as its standard implementation methodology for inegrating analytics into corporate business processes. ...

... "The adoption of DMAIC - short for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control - brings for the first time rigidly defined business goals, milestones and measurements to data mining projects. Until now the absence of such discipline has put many businesses off data mining according to Bloor Research analyst David Norris, restricting its use to specialized, low volume projects.

DMAIC is one of two Six Sigma methodologies and is most commonly used to improve existing business processes. It was chosen as the KXEN standard implementation methodology for its completeness, its clear tasks/deliverables descriptions and its suitability for business users. Six Sigma was pioneered by Motorola in 1986 and is a service mark and trademark of that company. The move also highlights KXEN's use in broader Six Sigma projects for overall business performance improvement initiatives where data mining can help identify the true indicators of performance, spot trends and detect failures. ... "PressPass: It's said that you're a Six Sigma black belt. Could you explain what that means and why it's an asset, and tell us how you parlay that sort of expertise into success in your role as CIO? Scott: Six Sigma is a data-driven process for making business decisions and choosing investments that help ensure a return for your business. It's a discipline in which you use analytical tools to draw out statistically significant information. So if you're talking to customers, for example, you want to do that in such a way that you come away with a genuine understanding of what they want, and you grasp the difference between what you could do to make those customers feel better vs. what's critical to enabling those customers to be successful, and what's critical to Microsoft's growth. Using good data and analytical tools, you can invest in programs like improving the business or putting in a new information system with the confidence that you'll achieve the desired result in terms of incremental business value. For me, that's always measured in a ledger. Any benefit we talk about has to be quantified in a way that demonstrates increased shareholder value. " ...

This quick de-levering, coupled with the Company's attractive growth prospects and continued cost reductions have created conditions for a dividend recapitalization. Six Sigma Test Process: Lower Failure Rate: Via ARNnet | All is not quiet on the Western Digital front

Additional resources on using Six Sigma in the test process:

Via Westgard QC Lesson: From Method Validation to Six Sigma - Translating Method Performance Claims into Sigma Metrics: "While it is probably disconcerting to find that a single test process has two different Sigma metrics, it's not surprising that a test performs differently at different levels. It would be far more unusual if a test performed the same at all the levels of concentration. For the high level control, a Sigma metric of 4.56 is actually acceptable. But for the low level control, a Sigma metric of less than zero is clearly bad. "

Via Conference Presentation Summary: "Running these tests by hand became cumbersome so the group developed a nightly test harness that runs each of the quality tests and collects all of the data to present a single comprehensive view of measured quality. It was a small move from this point to start a continuous test process that runs a slimmed down set of the quality tests whenever code is checked into the source code repository. The continuous measure of quality then is the final blending of extreme programming with Six Sigma. "

Bioinformatics is an emerging discipline, which combines efforts and advances in computer science, computational science, and various aspects of life science. While there is currently no generally agreed upon definition of 'bioinformatics,' one view is that bioinformatics is concerned with the creation and development of advanced information and computational technologies to solve problems in biology.

The areas emphasized include computational genomics, proteomics, pharmacogenomics, metabolomics, epigenetics and very large-scale biological simulations, with the ultimate aim of being able to simulate at the molecular level entire cells. While the research at the COE is very fundamental, since the practical implications are often immediate, emphasis will be placed on the rapid commercialization of the ideas and technology that is developed. By combining uniquely talented individuals with superb resources, the goal is to create one of the worlds best Bioinformatics Centers.

Kaizen: A lesson in organization

From Battle Creek Enquirer, MI ... give you tips. They reorganized and streamlined their processing room this week under the Kaizen management plan. The processing ...

What is Kaizen: Taken from the Japanese words kai and zen where kai means change and zen means good. The popular meaning is continual improvement of all areas of a company not just quality. Kaizen is actually a way of life philosophy, assuming that every aspect of our life deserves to be constantly improved. The Kaizen philosophy lies behind many Japanese management concepts such as Total Quality Control, Quality Control circles, small group activities, and labor relations. Kaizen is Japanese for "continuous improvement." The method was developed in Japan and first used in the automotive manufacturing industry. It is gaining in popularity because it involves a simple, practical approach to the goal of "process improvement." A Kaizen event is a highly focused, action-oriented, improvement workshop where an improvement team takes immediate action to improve a specific process. Any business process can be improved using Kaizen. In a Kaizen event, a small group of people get together and concentrate on improving one specific process, making a major improvement in five days or less. A Kaizen event is a good way to get instant results... The Kaizen management philosophy is more people-oriented, more easy to implement, and requires long-term discipline.
