The major hardware requirements for Shell’s application were robustness, large display size to view forms and drawings, true mobility and high-speed performance. Shell’s engineers are equipped with Xplore’s iX104C2D tablets with 512MB RAM, integrated GPRS, active X-dock vehicle dock and external USB keyboard. The tablets are sealed and protected, have ATEX and UL1604 certification for use in hazardous environments and provide over 30 unique rugged characteristics that counteract and minimize damage in harsh environments. Shell GAS provides gas delivery service as well as maintenance and installation service of gas vessels at customer sites. Xplore tablets are primarily used for engineering functions to maintain the vessels at the customer’s location, install new LPG vessels into new customer properties, and remove them when they are no longer needed. Engineers can complete orders onsite at the customer location and send finalized work order forms back to the office real-time. The original paper-based method, when documents were sent by fax or mail was slow; and the forms did not always include all the vital details. Utilizing the conditional format of the electronic forms, Shell GAS receives all the required data. Due to the streamlined process, the company achieves a higher level of customer satisfaction. Six Sigma Methodology ...

Nomination Edit Form

... "Using the Six-Sigma methodology, the CBU identified and implemented a series of step-off-pad (SOP) waste management practices that resulted in substantial reductions in both SOP and job control waste (JCW) generation. One significant revision to waste management practices that surfaced as a result of this analysis was the utilization of Sealands (i.e. multi-modal) shipping containers in lieu of the traditional 45 and 90 ft3 (i.e., B-12 and B-25) waste packaging containers. Sealands meet the requirements of a D.O.T. Strong Tight container having equivalent containment integrity when compared to the more expensive B-12 and B-25. This simple yet innovative approach reduced waste handling time, waste characterization and manifesting paperwork, container costs, and the amount of space otherwise required at the disposal site all contributing to significantly improved and cost-effective waste management practices." ...

Six Sigma Business Analysis Tool

Document SR-2002-8

... "The Savannah River High Level Waste (HLW) Division?s Corrosion Control Program (CPP) relies on laboratory analysis of the tank contents in order to adjust the tank chemistry of about 36 million gallons of highly radioactive and caustic liquid waste to ensure tank structural integrity. The HLW Corrosion Control Sample Reduction Team applied the Six Sigma business analysis tool to reduce by 77% the number of high level waste samples pulled. This resulted in a cost avoidance of over $7 million over the next five years (FY02 to FY07) and an annual waste disposal savings of over 20 cubic meters of job control waste related to tank sampling. The Team application of the Six Sigma rigorous and statistically-based analysis process, coupled with data verification by outside organizations, exemplify using life cycle assessment and environmental cost accounting to reduce waste, labor cost, environmental risks, and operating life cycle cost. The hard dollar savings to the SRS are $1.6M per year and the productivity savings are $0.5M per year. The total savings through FY06 are about $6.2 million and a conservative estimate of waste volume avoidance of about 4,200 cubic feet. This PIP is an excellent demonstration of evaluating and understanding the requirements placed on a process and challenging them to ensure that they add value to the output, and can achieve significant results. Balanced Scorecard Innovation in the Government Sector ...

Report on Balanced Scorecard Conference ...

... "The Organization for the Balanced Scorecard. Debrah Whitaker and Mario Bognanno of Renaissance actually did a better job than Norton of describing how the Balanced Scorecard can be applied to the public sector. Strategy is always a hypothesis, a dynamic process. Agencies develop wonderful plans - the problem is in the implementation. Often great strategic plans gather dust. The Balanced Scorecard can be adapted to the government sector, but with some differences. In government in the past, budget has been the driver for strategy. The Scorecard must be adapted to reflect the unique role and mission of an agency. Latest innovation in the Scorecard introduces the stakeholder perspective, reflecting integration of the customer and budgetary perspectives." ...

BioInformatics Role in Discovery of New Compounds: deCODE Submits IND for Novel Anti-atherosclerosis Compound DG041 ...

From PR Newswire (press release) ... drug discovery and development capabilities to offer innovative products and services in DNA-based diagnostics, bioinformatics, genotyping, structural biology ...

... deCODE genetics (Nasdaq: DCGN) has submitted an investigational new drug application (IND) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for DG041, a novel, first-in-class, orally-administered small molecule for the treatment of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). In preclinical studies, DG041 has been shown to be a selective and potent antagonist of the EP3 receptor for prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), inhibiting, in a dose-dependent manner, human platelet aggregation induced in vitro by PGE2. deCODE identified EP3 as a target in PAOD through its population genetics research, which linked variations in the gene encoding EP3 to a significantly increased risk of the disease. Pending clearance by the FDA, deCODE intends to initiate a Phase I clinical trial of DG041 this spring. ...

BioInformatics Role in Discovery of Novel Compounds for Drugs ...

Through its population genetics research in Iceland, deCODE identified common versions of the gene encoding EP3 (the PTGER3 gene) that confer significantly increased risk of PAOD. These variants are believed to increase susceptibility to the disease through heightened expression of EP3. Functional analysis underscores the important role of EP3 in modulating the biology of the platelet and the vessel wall. Binding of PGE2 to EP3 is known to increase platelet aggregation, and EP3 is expressed in smooth muscle cells found in atherosclerotic plaque. DG-041 is a novel, selective and potent antagonist of the EP3 receptor. In preclinical in vitro studies it has been shown to inhibit human platelet aggregation induced by PGE2, and to do so in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, ex-vivo inhibition of rat platelet aggregation can be demonstrated after oral dosing with DG041. In mice, DG041 has been shown to protect against intravascular coagulation in a model based on prostanoid-induced platelet activation. DG041 has been shown to have minimal effect on bleeding time in animal studies, nor does it inhibit the effect of other platelet agonists such as adenosine diphosphate (ADP), collagen, thrombin or epinephrine.

AFMC Lean Transformation ...

From AFMC News Service ...

... "We're working very hard at looking at all the processes we use to accomplish our tasks, and we're finding out that more often than not we create a lot of extra steps for our people to go through as they try and do their jobs. We've just had the Georgia International Lean Symposium here, and part of the whole Lean process is to see what it really takes to get the job done on time, on cost, and correctly, and see if we can get rid of those extra steps and distractions. In the process of doing that, we have an opportunity to be able to deliver our products to the warfighter cheaper and to deliver them on time. That's really the objective of this whole thing to make sure we're actually what I call the valued team member of the world's most respected air and space force.

Q. Lean is rapidly transforming the way we operate at the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center. How has the rest of the command embraced this concept? General Martin: We recently had the Air Force board visit that's a group of two star officers responsible for putting together the entire Air Force budgeting program. They visited five of our bases, and when they came back, they said the improvements they saw in Lean were extraordinary. The culture was changing, people were enthusiastic and they had gotten the word and seen it almost as a religious passion. That was how they described it, and that was very encouraging because that came from their talking to the work force. If you've got the work force telling you they're happy about doing something different and better and it's producing things faster, quicker and on cost, then you've really got it going right." ...
