6 Sigma Healthcare Study Shows Benefits

Healthcare association sees benefits from the application of Six Sigma methods to identify the critical levers for patient care. ...

... "In a retrospective study, Ms. Gamerdinger and colleagues from Mercy Medical Center evaluated the outcomes of a Six Sigma performance improvement project focused on compliance with JCAHO CAP Core Measures to ensure that each measure of care was met. Utilizing Six Sigma methodology, researchers identified critical processes and key stakeholders in patient care and utilized specific tools for process flow, cause/effect matrices, and outcomes analysis. The hospital also dedicated several full-time positions to the new methodology and trained more than 100 individuals in the Six Sigma program. When deviations from the Six Sigma protocol occurred, timely feedback was provided to care providers. After program implementation, researchers collected and analyzed data related to core measures, length of stay, and mortality in 1,550 patients with CAP admitted to the hospital during the study period. Results indicated that compliance scores for each JCAHO Core Measure improved from 70% to over 90%. CAP order usage improved from 40 %to 73%, yielding an 82.5% increase. Mean length of stay was reduced from 5.9 days to 5.1 days, a 13.56% reduction, which was associated with over $300,000 in cost savings. By the end of the study period, in-hospital mortality rates also decreased from 6.7% to 3.5%, a 47.8% reduction. " ...

... "PressPass: It's said that you're a Six Sigma black belt. Could you explain what that means and why it's an asset, and tell us how you parlay that sort of expertise into success in your role as CIO? Scott: Six Sigma is a data-driven process for making business decisions and choosing investments that help ensure a return for your business. It's a discipline in which you use analytical tools to draw out statistically significant information. So if you're talking to customers, for example, you want to do that in such a way that you come away with a genuine understanding of what they want, and you grasp the difference between what you could do to make those customers feel better vs. what's critical to enabling those customers to be successful, and what's critical to Microsoft's growth. Using good data and analytical tools, you can invest in programs like improving the business or putting in a new information system with the confidence that you'll achieve the desired result in terms of incremental business value. For me, that's always measured in a ledger. Any benefit we talk about has to be quantified in a way that demonstrates increased shareholder value. " ...

Kaizen principles adopted at Breeze ...

... "Since our initial investment Breeze has obtained three new patents, centralized materials purchasing, instituted Kaizen events that have led to cost reductions and adopted Kanban disciplines to streamline inventory management, said American Capital Vice President Helen Yang. As a result, it has significantly reduced its leverage and impressively outperformed our expectations. This quick de-levering, coupled with the Company's attractive growth prospects and continued cost reductions have created conditions for a dividend recapitalization. American Capital first invested in Breeze in August 2004, supporting Wind Point's acquisition. Lean manufacturing is slow to pay back in the pharma industry ...
The recently conducted 2006 survey showed that while more than half of the respondents said their companies have implemented Lean, Six Sigma or Operational Excellence, less than half of those Lean initiatives have produced satisfactory results. Lean Manufacturing Stanley Furniture Efficiency Program: Via Stanley Furniture: Stanley Furniture Announces Second Quarter 2006 Operating Results ...

Stanley is committed to lean manufacturing as a means of continuous improvement, as shown in its first quarter earnings announcement. ...

Comments on Stanley's lean manufacturing program from its first quarter management discussion: "Recently, we began reinvigorating our continuous improvement efforts using lean manufacturing principles, to improve processes and efficiencies. Near term, as these efforts allow us to continue reducing inventories, we anticipate lower production levels and operating margins. How quickly and to what extent we are able to lower costs, improve quality and reduce inventories is difficult to project, but we are confident this will position the Company to better compete primarily as a domestic manufacturer, execute our strategy and deliver value, concluded Scheffer. "

Stanley has created a competitive advantage through its on-shore manufacturing capability. This flexible blend of manufacturing capabilities is discussed in the 2005 annual report. ...

Stanley's Blended Manufacturing Strategy: Cellular Lean Manufacturing: "Central to executing this blended strategy are our four U.S. factories – domestic manufacturing capabilities we regard not only as our core competency but also a competitive advantage. Very simply, the ability to manufacture an extensive product line – accounting for some two-thirds of our revenues – in close proximity to our U.S. customer base is critical. We don't believe supply chains, which begin on the other side of the world can match our average shipping rate: less than 14 days.

To provide our products and support this broad distribution network, we have implemented a blended operating strategy combining efficient and flexible manufacturing processes with offshore sourcing of component parts and finished goods. We incorporate selected imported component parts and finished items in our product line to lower costs, provide design flexibility and offer a better value to our customers. We emphasize continuous improvement in our manufacturing and sourcing processes to enable us to continue providing competitive advantages to our customers, such as quick delivery, reduced inventory investment, high quality and value.

These manufacturing processes produce smaller, more frequent and cost-effective runs. We focus on identifying and eliminating manufacturing bottlenecks and waste, employing statistical process control and, in turn, adjusting manufacturing schedules on a daily basis, using cellular manufacturing in the production of components and improving our relationships with suppliers by establishing primary supplier relationships. In addition, a key element of our manufacturing processes is to involve all Company personnel, from hourly associates to management, in the improvement of the manufacturing processes by encouraging and responding to ideas to improve quality and to reduce manufacturing lead times. Furthermore, each of our manufacturing facilities is focused on compatible products to improve quality and lower production costs. "
