TPS Heijunka Tools: People Key ...

Role of Management in a Lean Manufacturing Environment (SAE International) ...

Gary Convis, President, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, writes ...

... "The Toyota Production system is an integrated and interdependent system involving many elements. I like to think of it as a triangle, where one side is philosophy, one side is technology, and the other side is management. Cradled in the middle of the triangle is what TPS is really all about - people. Human development is at the very core of TPS. It is often overlooked, as people seize on the more tangible aspects of TPS. Engineers are particularly likely to latch on to tools like kanban, heijunka, and jidoka, and think they have captured the essence of TPS. " ...

Simulation Model of the Lean Manufacture of NIF Assemblies

... "The concept of Lean Manufacturing, which was pioneered at Toyota, emphasizes continuous improvement through the identification of the value stream and the reduction of waste, and making value flow at the pull of the customer. The Lean concepts have been applied to many manufacturing applications in industry, most notably the major automotive plants. The NIF Lean Enterprise Team at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is working to apply the concepts of Lean Manufacturing to the production of the mechanical and optical assemblies which will comprise the NIF system. Application of the Lean concepts requires the identification of the value stream, along with streamlining of the production process, such that unnecessary steps are eliminated, and production flows according to the demand schedule in a 'just-in-time' manner." ...

... A series of workshops presented by the Brookline-based nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) will help industry and suppliers in the Boston region cut costs, improve profits, and defend jobs by eliminating waste through lean manufacturing. The series of seven workshops, including new ones on value-stream mapping for offices and healthcare, will run March 29-31 at the Wyndham Boston hotel, Boston, MA. ...

Lean manufacturing cuts costs and inventories rapidly to free cash and resources, which is critical in a competitive world economy. Lean supports growth by improving productivity and quality, reducing lead times, and freeing resources. For example, it frees office and plant space and increases capacity so companies can add product lines, in-source component production, and increase output of existing products. Companies implementing lean can take advantage of renewed economic growth by increasing sales while controlling costs. Based in Brookline, MA, the Lean Enterprise Institute is a nonprofit training, publishing, and research organization founded by James Womack, Ph.D., in August 1997. It has developed simple but powerful tools for implementing a set of ideas known as lean production and lean thinking, based initially on the Toyota Production System and now extended to an entire Lean Business System.

NAVAIR Depot Gets Lean ...

From NAVAIR, Susan Brink, NAVAIR Public Affairs Specialist writes ...

... "NAVAIR Depot Jax has determined that the next step to be taken to become a world-class organization is the empowerment methodology known in the industry as Lean Operations. So what is Lean, and why use that tool in the depot environment? Lean is simply a method that was initially developed by the Japanese to manufacture automobiles, referred to as the Toyota Production System. The method has evolved into a very dynamic tool set that is applicable to all businesses and disciplines. Its primary focus starts with the identification and elimination of waste. Waste, in this instance, refers to any activity in a process that does not add value to the generation of a quality product. Some examples include the time associated with waiting for parts or paperwork, searching for parts, and walking around the plant to retrieve tools, parts, or work instructions. Lean also transforms production processes from an inefficient push system to a more efficient and less costly flow and pull system. There are other businesses in the industry that utilize the Lean methodology and have seen success. NAVAIR Depot Jax has partnered with General Electric Aircraft Engines to see what has worked for them and identify processes throughout the Depot to review." ...

... Factory Logic, the leading provider of lean manufacturing and material management applications, today announced RFID Material Flow Tracking & Analytics -- an innovative new component of its award-winning Factory Logic(TM) Lean Operations Management System. Designed specifically for factories using lean production techniques, this new capability helps factory personnel further reduce waste in terms of both inventory and manpower, while ensuring a smooth, reliable production flow. The new capability combines Radio Frequency Identification technology for shop floor tracking with powerful analysis of kanban movement to provide production and supply chain managers with insight into their actual material flow that has not been possible until now. Data collection is completely transparent and non-intrusive - it does not require any action on the part of shop floor personnel, nor does it interfere in any way with visual factory controls such as kanban, heijunka boards, etc. Used with Factory Logic's heijunka sequencing and scheduling, kanban management, and production monitoring applications, RFID Material Flow Tracking and Analytics provides factory personnel with automatic real-time tracking of kanban movement through the factory to collect precise measurements of actual production performance, including: demand, cycle time, batch sizes, inventory levels, and material velocity. ...

The principles of lean thinking were first documented in the U.S. by researchers from MIT International Motor Vehicle Program and in the book 'The Machine That Changed the World' by James Womack, Daniel Jones and Daniel Roos. The lean philosophy employs five basic principles of lean thinking: (1) specify value from the perspective of the end customer, (2) identify the value stream for each product, (3) create continuous flow of the product, (4) let the customer 'pull' the product and (5) strive for perfection. Lean Value Stream: Resource Management

From Robins Air Force Base, Air Force Materiel Command ...

... "By 1950, the Japanese, who greatly admired Henry Ford, established the Toyota Production system that began to eliminate waste from the process. In the 1970s, the Japanese continued to implement American principles by Juran, Deming, Shewhart, and Crosby at Toyota. By 1980s, Americans took notice of the loss of market share of automobiles, shipbuilding, electronics, avionics, office equipment, etc., and embraced Quality. By the late 1980s, Toyota had nearly achieved Lean. Over the years, the Air Force explored various programs such as Zero Defects, Meaningful Measures of Merit, Total Quality Management, and QP4 in an effort to streamline processes and eliminate waste. By 1990, the focus became Lean Principles with the establishment of five principles: Value, Value Stream, Flow, Pull, and Perfection. By 2000, Lean was used in Production, Services and Remanufacturing. With Lean, the customer determined the first principle to be value, based on cost, quality, and delivery. " ...

The Lean Aerospace Initiative (LAI) is an evolving learning community that brings together key aerospace stakeholders from industry, government, organized labor, and MIT. It is a consortium-guided research program led by the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics in close collaboration with the Sloan School of Management, and is managed under the auspices of the Center for Technology, Policy and Industrial Development (CTPID), a MIT-wide interdisciplinary research center.

The term “lean” refers to the emerging conceptual framework for organizing and managing an organization so as to deliver maximum value to the customer, using the minimum quantity of resources and eliminating all forms of waste. It represents an expansion of the Toyota Production System, which is credited with revolutionizing automobile manufacturing.
